阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
It feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly, my mother will push the conversation into World War 3. She’ll talk about my lack of bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment, I don’t want to do any job related to science, either. In fact, when I was pushed to say that I planned to major(主修) in English and communications, she nearly had a heart attack.
“Why can’t you be like my co-worker’s son?” she bemoans all the time. Her coworker’s son received a four-year scholarship and is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don’t know what to answer except that I simply can’t be like Mr. Perfect as I’ve called the unnamed co-worker’s son. I can’t be like him. I am the type of the person who loved to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve a career because I love it, not because of a fame or salary.
I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I’ve seen my mother struggle to raise me on her small salary and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6:30 am and usually comes home around 5 pm or even 6pm. However, I want her to know that by becoming a doctor, it doesn’t mean I’ll be successful. I’d rather follow my dreams and create my own future.

In 1939, two brothers, Mac and Dick McDonald, started a drive-in restaurant in San Bernardino, California. They carefully chose a busy corner for their location. They had run their own businesses for years, first a theater, then a barbecue restaurant, then another drive-in. But in their new operation, they offered a new, shortened menu: French fries, hamburgers, and sodas. To this small selection they added one new concept: quick service, no waiters or waitresses, and no tips.
Their hamburgers sold for fifteen cents. Cheese was another four cents. Their French fries and hamburgers had a remarkable uniformity(一致), for the brothers had developed a strict routine for the preparation of their food, and they insisted on their cooks’ sticking to their routine. Their new drive-in became incredibly popular, particularly for lunch. People drove up by the hundreds during the busy noontime. The self-service restaurant was so popular that the brothers had allowed ten copies of their restaurant to be opened. They were content with this modest success until they met Ray Kroc.
Kroc was a salesman who met the McDonald brothers in 1954, when he was selling milkshake-mixing machines. He quickly saw the unique appeal of the brothers’ fast-food restaurants and bought the right to franchise (特许经营) other copies of their restaurants. The agreement struck included the right to duplicate the menu, the equipment, even their red and white buildings with the golden arches (拱门)。
Today McDonald’s is really a household name. Its names for its sandwiches have come to mean hamburger in the decades since the day Ray Kroc watched people rush up to order fifteen-cent hamburgers. In 1976, McDonald’s had over $1billion in total sales. Its first twenty-two years is one of the most incredible success stories in modern American business history.

② Allow ten copies of their restaurant to be opened
③ Start a drive-in restaurant in San Bernardino, California
④ Has over $1 billion in total sales
A. ③②①④ B. ③①②④ C. ③①④② D. ③②④①

Whether you’re headed to another country for business or pleasure, it is likely that you need to keep in touch with family or business partners in the United States. But if you plan to do that using your cell phone, you could have an unwelcome surprise---U.S. cell phones don’t work abroad. U.S. companies use different forms of technology, not like most of the international community, including Europe.
However, there is an easy, cost-effective solution to staying in touch while you’re traveling. You can rent a phone that is guaranteed to work in the countries you’re visiting. Roadpost offers a 30-day cell phone rental plan that includes free incoming calls, free voicemail and call waiting services.
The service is convenient and simple. You can place your order online and your phone will be shipped to arrive on the date you want. If an unexpected business trip comes up, Roadpost can provide next-day delivery for most cities. In addition to the phone, Roadpost provides a spare battery, travel charger and a leather carrying case.
When your phone is shipped from Roadpost, you receive an e-mail confirmation that contains your international cell phone number so you can leave it with family members and business partners; Roadpost even provides business cards preprinted with your international phone number.
Those who don’t want to be without e-mail while traveling can rent an international BlackBerry. It can be hard to stay in touch by e-mail when traveling. With an international BlackBerry, you can email as much as you like, without worrying about an expensive bill. If you’re traveling to very remote areas, you may want to consider renting a satellite phone: Because they receive their signals from satellites, these phones work anywhere on the planet, including oceans and mountains. The temperature of the sun is over 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit at the surface, but it rises to perhaps more than 16 million degrees at the center. The sun is so much hotter than the earth that matter can exist only as a gas, except at the core. In the core of the sun, the pressures are so great against the gases that, despite the high temperature, there may be a small solid core. However, no one really knows, since the center of the sun can never be directly observed.
Solar astronomers do know that the sun is divided into five layers or zones. Starting at the outside and going down into the sun, the zones are the corona, chromosphere, photosphere, convection zone and finally the core. The first three zones are regarded as the sun’s atmosphere ends and the main body of the sun begins.
The sun’s outermost layer begins about 10,000 miles above the visible surface and goes outward for millions of miles. This is the only part of the sun that can be seen during an eclipse such as the one in February 1979. At any other time, the corona can be seen only when special instruments are used on cameras and telescopes to shut out the glare of the sun’s rays.
The corona is a brilliant, pearly white, filmy light, about as bright as the full moon. Its beautiful rays are a sensational sight during an eclipse. The corona’s rays flash out in a brilliant fan that has wispy spikelike (一束束穗状) rays near the sun’s north and south poles. The corona is thickest at the sun’s equator.
The corona rays are made up of gases streaming outward at tremendous speeds and reaching a temperature of more than 2 million degrees Fahrenheit. The rays of gas thin out as they reach the space around the planets. By the time the sun’s corona rays reach the earth, they are weak and invisible.
56、 Matter on the sun can exist only in the form of gas because of the sun’s ______.
A. size B. age C. location D. temperature
57、 With what topic is the second paragraph mainly concerned?
A. How the sun evolved. B. The structure of the sun.
C. Why scientists study the sun. D. The distance of the sun from the planets.
58、 All of the following are parts of the sun’s atmosphere EXCEPT the _______.
A. corona B. core C. photosphere D. chromosphere
59、 According to the passage, as the corona rays reach the planets, they become _______.
A. hotter B. clearer C. thinner D. stronger
60、 The paragraph following the passage most likely discusses which of the following?
A. The remaining layers of the sun.
B. The evolution of the sun to its present form.
C. The eclipse of February 1979.
D. Scientists will cost more money on researching the corona.

Possible version:
At the end of the 16th century, English was only spoken by the native speakers. However, English has changed quite a lot over the past four centuries. At present, English, including British English and American English, has become an international language. A great number of people in some African and Asian countries, such as India and China, speak English as the second language or learn it as a foreign language. As far as I’m concerned, English is so important in our daily life that we must try our best to learn it well.

In his lowest days when few people bought his records, Taiwan singer Steve Chou lived alone in Canada and did little. One day, he passed by a local CD store and heard a song that greatly attracted him.
“My heart tells me that music is the thing I truly want to do, not for fame(名誉)or money,” Chou said. That’s how we luckily have such a music genius, who has since then composed(作曲)lots of hits for the pop music charts (排行榜)。

During my travels through the mountains of Greece I was only ever scared once. It was dusk and as I walked alone I came across six large wolves(狼)that were feeding on the body of a dead animal. I had heard many stories about wolves as a child and it was this animal that I feared more than any other. The wolves before me were huge, at least 6 feet long and covered with thick grey fur.
As I went near, the wolves left the blood-covered snow that surrounded the body and started walking towards me, one after another. They stopped about 20 metres from me and stared. The lead wolf raised his head into the air and took in a deep breath, as if he was smelling my presence. The animals looked both beautiful and frightening, but I knew I could not show them my fear. As I drew nearer, the lead wolf raised its head once more but this time let out a long, loud cry. The awful cry rang out across the silent valley. I had never heard a more frightening sound. I was almost certain it was a sign to be death.
Every moment I expected to see the pack of wolves dash(冲)at me. I knew my only hope was to pretend I had no fear. I walked past the line of wolves, like a general(将军)moving among his soldiers. They cried out loud again. But when they saw that their cry did not cause me to change my direction or make me run they feared to come after me, so they let me pass and returned to the dead animal.
If I had turned back or tried to run away when they marched out to meet me, I am certain the whole pack would have attacked(进攻)me in a moment. But my show of false courage intimidated them and kept them back.
64、 Why didn’t the wolves attack the man?

67、 Which is the best title for this story?

C. My Mountain Travels D. A Man Without Fear

This summer, join the International Conservation(保护)Scouts on a fun-filled holiday with a difference. Year after year, young people from all around the world get together at one of our sixteen conservation camps. Their shared aim(目标)is to help protect the countryside and its wildlife.
Many animals and plants are in danger of disappearing forever. The dormouse, a kind of mouse, for example, needs woodland plants for food and trees to stay in. Its habitat (栖息地) is being destroyed by man and it needs our help to survive.
On a conservation camp holiday, you’ll learn all about nature and how to protect it. Our trained leaders will be with you and tell you everything you need to know. Because of this, you don’t need any experience, just energy and enthusiasm(热情)。 You will explore the countryside and work to ensure the survival (生存) of hundreds of animals and plants and still have plenty of time to enjoy the camp’s excellent sport games and organized nature paths through beautiful scenery.
The International Conservation Scouts is a world-wide organization, so there must be a camp near you. You can spend a splendid holiday at any of the camps for as little as £60, including accommodation(住宿) and food.

Many people think dreams are full of messages that may not be clear to us common people. But if we think about what is going on in our lives, we can usually come up with an answer. Let’s look at some of the most common dreams. What do these dreams mean?
Falling
You’re falling, falling, falling… and then you wake up. This dream is said to mean you are afraid of something or worried about something. There may be something in your life that is out of control and there is nothing you can do to stop it. Another explanation is that you may fail in something. Maybe you’re not doing well in school or work.
Taking an exam(or forgetting that you have one)
You suddenly realize you have to take an exam at that very moment. You might be running here and there to find your classroom. Experts say this dream may mean you’re being tested about something or maybe you are facing a challenge.
Flying
Dreaming that you are flying means you are on top of things. You are in control of the things that matter to you. It may also mean you have confidence in yourself and think no one and nothing can beat you.
Trying to run, but going nowhere
You’re trying to run, but either your legs won’t move or you simply aren’t going anywhere. Some experts think this dream means you’re trying to do too many things at once and can’t catch up or move forward.
In fact, unlike these dreams, there are also many strange dreams that experts may not be able to explain.

When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings(缺点)。 Wee k by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn’t a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last,I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, then he asked. “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like ? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it.“That’s just for you,” he said.“You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it wi ll be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”

The reason why people went to Hollywood to make films was the sun. At first people made films in New York on the east coast of the United States. Also near Hollywood you can find mountains and sea and desert. They did not have to travel far to make any kind of film.

Does this situation seem familiar to you? Your English is progressing well, the grammar is now familiar, the reading comprehension is no problem, you are communicating quite fluently, but: Listening is STILL a problem! First of all, remember that you are not alone. Listening comprehension is probably the most difficult job for almost all learners of English as a foreign language. The most important thing is to listen as often as possible. The first step is to find listening resources. The Internet is really a useful tool for English students. You can download The RealPlayer from The RealPlayer allows you to use the Internet like a radio station.
Once you have begun to listen on a regular basis, you might still be frustrated (懊恼) by limited understanding. What should you do?
Here is some of the advice I give my students:
●Accept the fact that you are not going to understand everything.
●Stay relaxed when you do not understand — even if you continue not to understand for a long time.
●Do not translate what you hear into your native language.
●Listen for the general idea of the conversation. Don’t concentrate on detail until you have understood the main ideas.
I remember the problems I had in understanding spoken German when I first went to Germany. In the beginning, when I didn’t understand a word, I insisted on translating it in my mind. This method usually resulted in confusion. Then, after the first six months, I discovered two very important facts. Firstly, translating creates a wall between the listener and the speaker. Secondly, most people repeat themselves constantly. By remaining calm, I noticed that — even if I didn’t pay much attention, I could usually understand what the speaker had said.

58、 The underlined part “a wall” in the last paragraph refers to “_____”。

In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 p.m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it"s a matter of life and death. The time chosen for the call communications is important.
In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the attention to a dinner party is extended only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts of the world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from cultures that treat time differently. Promptness (准时) is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. In the U.S. no one would think of keeping a business friend waiting for an hour. It would be too impolite. A person who is 5 minutes late is expected to make a short apology. If he is less than 5 minutes late, he will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.

Text10
Do you know anything about the famous American president Abraham Lincoln? When Lincoln was just a boy, he had to help his father look after their farm. It was hard work and there weren’t any interesting things for him to do. Lincoln wanted to go to school, but there was no school there. He was sad most of the time.
Mrs. Lincoln loved the boy very much. She tried her best to make Lincoln happy. One early morning, she got up early and went to the town. That was a long way and it took her a long time to get to the town. She bought something there and started back. And it was late in the evening when she got home.
The next morning, Mrs. Lincoln said to Lincoln, “ Today is your birthday. We are going to have a party.” She put some food on the table and brought out a present. “A book!” Lincoln cried. It was an old book, but he liked it. A smile came to his face. He looked up at Mrs. Lincoln and said, “Thank you, mom.”

From the 1910s to the 1950s Hollywood was the film center of the world. Every family knew the names of the film stars Charlie Chaplin, Greta Garbo, Bergman and hundreds more.
The reason why people went to Hollywood to make films was the sun. At first people made films in New York on the east coast of the United States. Also near Hollywood you can find mountains and sea and desert. They did not have to travel far to make any kind of film.
When TV became popular in the 1960s, Hollywood started making films for television. Then in the 1970s they discovered people still went to cinema to see big expensive films. After twenty years they are still making films in Hollywood and people watch them all over the world.

55、 The best way to improve our listening is to _____.
A. practise as much as possible
B. find as many listening resources as possible
C. use the Internet like a radio station
D. speak naturally and read as much as possible

A. Try to understand everything.
B. Try to get the main ideas.
C. Pay much attention to details.
D. Translate each word in your mind.
57、 Why did the writer mention his / her experience in Germany?
A. To prove the importance of translating.
B. To show the problems of speaking a foreign language.
C. To tell us the importance of staying calm.
D. To point out an ineffective method of listening.
58、 The underlined part “a wall” in the last paragraph refers to “_____”。
A. a communication barrier (障碍)

62、 “The same meaning is attached to telephone calls after 11:00p.m.”Here “attached” means _____.
A. taken B. drawn C. given D. shown

64、 What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The important role of time in social life B. Time is treasure
C. The Importance of an Announcement D. Time and Tide Wait for No Man
65、 According to the passage, the author of the article may agree to which of the following statements?
A. It is appropriate to send your invitation cards three or four days before a dinner party date in the U.S.A.
B. It may be appropriate to send your invitation cards to your guests three or four days before a dinner party date in some countries.
C. It is best for one to make telephone calls at midnight because it costs much less.

Dear Tom,
How are you? You asked me in your last letter about my plan for the coming summer vacation. I am sorry that I didn’t t reply without delay.
How I wish I had read and replied to your email as soon as I received it. However, I was busy preparing for my final exam at that time, which is important for me. As a result, I had no choice but to completely focus on my study, for which I am very sorry. I hope you can understand me.
During the holiday, I am going to do a part-time job. On the one hand, I can earn some money to reduce the burden of my family. On the other hand, I can accumulate the social experience, which does good to my future life. At the same time, I will not forget to go over my lesson. I will spend an instructive holiday. How will you spend your holiday? I hope you have a good time.
These are my plans for the summer vacation. What’s yours? I am looking forward to your earliest reply.
Best wishes !
Yours,
Li Hua
